Maurice Sendak, June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012

What a talented, complicated man. This twenty minute interview he did with NPR's Terry Gross recently is so heart-breaking.

"I have nothing now but praise for my life. I'm not unhappy. I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can't stop them. They leave me and I love them more..... What I dread is the isolation."

  1. Did you see his interview with Stephen Colbert earlier this year? So funny and smart.

I read Where the Wild Things Are to all my classes on May 8.

  2. I've reread it about twenty times this week. How on earth did he produce such strange, resonant and moving books?

  3. It took 7 years to write, I was told in a children's lit class. And was originally going to be called Where the Wild Horses Are, until he decided that horses are too hard to draw. This could all well be apocryphal, of course. But it the 7 years part especially wouldn't surprise me.
